The commander of Sudan’s paramilitary force has called for a “temporary ceasefire” amid growing international pressure as the death toll in the four-day conflict exceeded 180 people.
Fighting has raged since Saturday between the president-backed Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces loyal to the country’s powerful vice-president, sparking fears of a broader civil conflict.
General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the military vice-president better known as Hemeti who commands the RSF, said on Tuesday that he had agreed to a one-day armistice after speaking with US secretary of state Antony Blinken by phone, but that the other side had not complied.
