False information cases in wake of riots test UK’s online safety law

Authorities have moved swiftly to punish people alleged to have been involved in the worst unrest England has experienced since 2011
Downing Street said that the government would ‘look more broadly at social media after this disorder’

The aftermath of the riots in England are providing an early test of the 2023 Online Safety Act with at least three cases under way involving recently created offences prohibiting the spread of false information.

One case involves a 55-year-old woman alleged to be the first person to spread false information on X that wrongly identified the suspect in the deadly Southport knife attack as being Muslim and an immigrant.
