Beijing confirms US trade talks amid rising diplomatic tension

Chinese officials are set to meet with their US counterparts for trade talks in Beijing on January 7 and 8, in a potential sign of progress amid a three-month truce in the trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

Chinese vice-ministerial level officials will meet with deputy US trade representative Jeffrey Gerrish at the talks, China’s commerce ministry said on Friday.

The talks come during a  90-day détente struck between presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Buenos Aires in December. The two leaders also spoke by phone on December 29, with both sides striking a positive tone in public comments after the call.
