Sir Keir Starmer has insisted that Labour’s landslide victory in Thursday’s election was proof that the country wanted his party’s version of change, despite only getting 34 per cent of the overall vote.
“As the dust settles on Thursday’s result, what is becoming clear I think for all to see is the mood of the nation, of the country is the mandate that we have to deliver change,” he said at a press conference in Downing Street on Saturday.
Yet Labour strategists are already raking through the election results, warning that winning such an overwhelming Commons majority — on a relatively low number of votes — could be a double-edged sword.
